How does Mobile Lifeline work?
Mobile Lifeline consists of three elements. A small, stealthy Agent you install on your computer, a secure Web Site, and the Mobile Lifeline Data Protection Center. The Agent persistently and stealthily contacts the Mobile Lifeline Protection Center to see if you have requested that any files be protected. Even after your computer has been lost or stolen you can go to the Mobile Lifeline Web Site to issue protective requests and to see if anyone has looked at your personal files. For more information see the Product Demo.
Will Mobile Lifeline affect my computer's performance?
No. Your computer will run just as usual.
How do I instruct my computer to protect itself after it is lost or stolen?
Either log onto the Subscriber Services Web Site and click the "Report Lost" button or call the 24/7 Mobile Lifeline Data Protection Call Center at 866-822-9788 and provide the username and password for your account. Once your computer is reported lost, a message will be sent instructing your computer to initiate protective actions.
What sort of protective actions will take place?
When you report your computer lost or stolen, the Mobile Lifeline Agent will encrypt your important data files and then send you a report detailing which files were encrypted and when they were last accessed and modified. This way you will know whether any files have been viewed or tampered with since your computer was out of your possession. You can also choose to have selected files retrieved or deleted from your lost or stolen computer.
How can I see if anyone has looked at my files after my computer is stolen?
After the security actions you have requested have been executed, the Agent will continue to attempt communication with the Mobile Lifeline Data Protection Center in order to provide you with a full report on your protected files. This report confirms when the Agent protected each file and shows if anyone opened or modified the files since the computer was lost or stolen.
Can I choose which files get encrypted if I lose my computer?
Yes. You can choose which files will be encrypted or wiped by file type. For instance, you can choose to have all common home or office files (such as word processing, e-mail, etc.) encrypted, or you can choose a specific file type, such as Adobe PhotoShop, to be encrypted. Any file marked for encryption or wiping is eligible for retrieval with Mobile Lifeline. Additionally… you may select specific documents for retrieval. Choosing which files will be protected is very easy and flexible.
What happens if I find my computer after my data has been encrypted?
When you report your computer found and request decryption, all files that were encrypted will be automatically decrypted.
Is Mobile Lifeline guaranteed to protect data on stolen computers every time?
Mobile Lifeline is an extremely effective way to protect data on lost or stolen computers. We cannot, however, guarantee it will be successful in every case. For example, if a file is being accessed by an application while Mobile Lifeline's protective actions are taking place on the lost computer, the file may be locked and therefore inaccessible to the protective actions. We agree with industry experts that the best security is a layered approach where Mobile Lifeline is used in concert with resident security such as password protection and encryption.
What if the thief doesn't connect to the Internet with my computer?
With Mobile Lifeline, you may configure the Screen Blocker feature that will activate after a specified amount of time since the last successful check-in. This feature prevents access to your computer by completely covering the screen with a dialog box that is removed when the correct password is entered. The program will not allow the user to switch or end programs or tasks, and if the user logs off or restarts your computer, the Screen Blocker will automatically reactivate before your desktop is displayed.
Since Mobile Lifeline is invisible on my system, with no control panels or interface, how can I modify security options within the software?
With the Username and Password you chose during registration, you can access the Mobile Lifeline Subscriber Web Site. This web interface provides the ability to report your device as lost or stolen, as well as the ability to modify your security options and preferences.
How will my privacy be protected?
Mobile Lifeline takes your privacy very seriously. We use state-of-the-art SSL connections to our product servers, and rigid public/private key encryption and digital certificates to ensure the authenticity of Mobile Lifeline agents installed upon your PC. Please review our Privacy Policy for more information.
Can I change my username once I have created it?
No, you cannot change your username once you have created it, however, you can change your password.
How do I get my password if I forget it?
On the Subscriber Services entrance page, there is a link for users who have lost their password. A new Temporary Password will be sent to you by mail to your registration address. Once you receive your Temporary Password, you can use it to log on and create a new user Password. You are then requested to replace the temporary password with your own new password. One of Mobile Lifeline’s built-in security features maintains all customer-generated passwords in an encrypted format, so we cannot send you your original password.
If I cannot access the Internet, is there another way I can access my account?
Yes. You can contact the Mobile Lifeline Call Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at: 866-822-9788 to initiate your protective actions. Please Note: You must have your username and password in order to initiate any protective actions.
What if I purchase a new computer, will I be able to move my data protection service from my old computer to the new one?
The Mobile Lifeline license is not transferable. Each license of the Mobile Lifeline product is valid only for the lifetime of the device that it is originally installed on. If the user purchases another system, and wishes to have Mobile Lifeline protection, they will have to purchase another license for that device.
How do I install Mobile Lifeline software?
It only takes a few minutes to install Mobile Lifeline software. Once you have downloaded the Mobile Lifeline Agent software, simply double-click on the downloaded file and Mobile Lifeline will automatically install itself.
How do firewalls affect the installation and/or usage of the Mobile Lifeline Product?
If your computer is sitting behind any type of firewall, software or hardware, you may experience difficulties downloading an executable file. You will have to configure the firewall to accept the download from Mobile Lifeline. Some firewalls provide an interface that will allow temporary acceptance of an executable, while others require opening up a port to accept the download.
